The Free Font Stigma Is a Skill Issue

"It looks like a free font." Ouch. We've all said it. Some of us have said it about our own work at 2am.
But the font is rarely the problem. Free fonts got their reputation because someone, somewhere, downloaded a curly script called Summer Breeze Signature and set it at 72pt with tracking that should be illegal. Meanwhile, indie foundries are quietly releasing type that's more interesting than half the premium catalogue. Type selection is a skill. Type
budget is not.
An independent foundry releasing free, open-source, experimental fonts. This is where we send anyone who says "free fonts are boring." Then we wait for the apology.
Free fonts sorted by vibe: beautiful, classy, punk, professional, weird. Go straight to weird. Your client's brand has enough "professional" already. It's drowning in it.
Free, open-source fonts built for expressive type. Proof that free doesn't mean compromised. It just means someone was very generous.
Indie fonts you can resize on the page and download as trials. Always test in your real layout. A font that looks gorgeous in a specimen can turn on you in a paragraph. Like a cat.
Okay, not free. But when there is budget, please spend it here instead of on the same corporate sans every fintech already licensed. Fonts with actual personality. Imagine.
The font is not the problem. The eye is.
